3 Healthy Foods That Could Kill You

We all want to eat healthy; well most of us anyway. Healthy snacks, healthy recipes, organic food, raw veg diets, and many other buzz words are being thrown out there. We read blogs, listen to Dr.Oz, and try to do the right thing. However some of the healthy food choices we make have deadly side effects that no one is really talking about.

Potatoes

Yes potatoes will kill you if they have turned green. When potatoes turn green it is a sign that the potatoes have been exposed to too much light and a natural glycoalkaloid known as solanine has occurred.
Eating a potato that has turned green may cause the following problems:

  • headache
  • nausea
  • fatigue
  • gastrointestinal disorders

If you notice a slight green layer just under the potato skin, cut away the green portions of the potato before cooking and eating. The rest of the potato is safe to eat.

Always store your potatoes in a dark, cool, dry place to prevent them from turning green.

Rhubarb

Rhubarb is a fantastic vegetable related to sorrel and dock. There is a reason however you have never seen rhubarb sold with its leaves. This is because rhubarb leaves contain high levels of oxalic acid which causes serious kidney damage which could lead to death.
Oxalic acid is also known to cause other serious conditions:

  • inflammation of the bladder
  • low lung function
  • asthmatic symptoms

You would however need to eat a lot of rhubarb leaves to actually die. However small amounts will still make you quite sick.

If you grow your own vegetables, don’t forget to remove the leaves before adding the rhubarb to your favorite salad.

This vegetable should be stored in the fridge and eaten within two days because it wilts quickly.

Keeping the leaves on until you are ready to eat will help keep it fresh.

Apples

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. That might not always be the case though. I mean ask Snow White right?
The seeds, pits, and kernels of some very healthy fruits and vegetables contain amygdalin in large amounts.

Apples, pears, mangoes, peaches, and apricots are among the fruits that contain this chemical which can turn into hydrogen cyanide.

Cyanide in small amounts causes the following conditions:

  • rapid breathing
  • weakness •
  • nausea and vomiting
  • restlessness
  • headaches
  • rapid heart rate
  • dizziness

Cyanide in large amounts causes the following conditions:

  • convulsions •
  • loss of consciousness
  • low blood pressure •
  • lung injury
  • slow heart rate •
  • respiratory failure leading to death

I wouldn’t worry about it too much though because you would need to swallow an incredible amount of seeds in order to get sick or die.
I have touched on just a few cases and there are many more. So keep your eyes open, read labels, and ask questions. This will help you make the right choices when it comes to consuming healthy food.
